The Real Sing.

The Real Sing is an acapella choir comprised of soprano, alto, tenor and baritone/bass sections. It has built a strong reputation as a musically skilled and entertaining ensemble, able to perform in a range of formats. In the vital and growing area of musical culture that is community-based choral singing, The Real Sing has developed into a highly polished group of singers and performers.

The Real Sing was founded by Martin Meader and friends in 1996, as a community-style choir i.e. open to all. Rright from the start, the choir’s repertoire has been drawn from a broad range of musical genres and styles. Jazz, pop, gospel, doo wop, motown, traditional folk and the odd hymn and classical piece are all there in the song book.

Performances began early on, with proud family members making up much of the early audiences. One of the first ‘real’ gigs was at a church-run nursing home for the elderly, near the beach at Cottesloe. The audience was very enthusiastic, and wanted more songs, even after we’d sung everything we knew. It could have got really ugly!

The Real Sing does original shows as well as concerts, and has performed across Western Australia at wineries and prisons; in State parliament and at Government House; at Rottnest Island and to a packed town hall in the mining town of Kalgoorlie; in jazz clubs, pubs and the Perth Concert Hall; and TRS loves festivals, having sung at Fairbridge Festival, the Nannup Blues Festival, and the Denmark Festival of Voice as well as smaller festivals and eistedfodds.

In 2006 The Real Sing competed in the ABC Choir of the Year competition, and gained third place in the open section of the State finals.

The Real Sing has sung for many organisations, including the Red Cross, the State Lotteries Commission, Happs Wineries, the RAC, the National Speakers Association of Australia, Mosman Town Council and the Perth International Arts' Festival.

In the early years, TRS had around three dozen voices. Now the choir numbers twenty two singers, and our musical director is Kris Arnott, a recent graduate from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, and an accomplished singer, instrumentalist and teacher of voice and piano.
